8 Things to Do in Cbus This Weekend

You can tell summer is right around the corner.  Not only is the weather warming up, but there are more things going on around town.  Everyone wants to get out of their house and just do something.  :)  Well, here are a few fun and unique options for this weekend.

1.  Make the short drive a little east of Columbus for the Arbor Day Festival at Dawes Arboretum.  Family fun or just an excuse to get outside (and get a free tree).
2.  Did you miss RenFest last Fall?  Well, here's your chance to catch the Spring version, Ashville's Viking Festival.  Here is a video of what to expect!
3.  There is rain in this week's weather forecast (though that will change ten times because who can really forecast Ohio Spring weather?), if it is raining, or you're just a movie buff, head to Studio 35's Comedy Film Festival.
4.  Check out the new wing at the Columbus Museum of Art at their season opener party 7:30-11pm, but get your tickets quick, it's almost sold out!
5.  Got a green thumb?  Pick out your plants for your garden at Inniswoods Metro Park at their annual plant sale.
6.  It's always an awesome combo when something you enjoy doing benefits others at the same time.  Sign up for Bowl for LOSS and Win on Sunday at 1pm at the Bowling Palace.
7.  Cheer on our professional rugby team for their inaugural home game against San Fran on Sunday at 3pm.
8.  Need some retail therapy?  Fashion for Philanthropy is having their Spring popup shop on Sunday 1-5pm benefiting Dress for Success Columbus

Where to drink...
Head to World of Beer Gateway for CD102.5's first Local and Live lineup, check it out here.

Where to eat...
I always thought it was a little odd to eat a meal inside a grocery store, but the whole building is all about food, so I guess it makes sense.  The Hills Market downtown is having a bloody marys and bacon brunch on Saturday from 9am to noon, just $15.

What are your plans this weekend?

Another beautiful spring weekend in Ohio!  Hope you were able to get outside and make the most of this Earth Day weekend.  I volunteered with Branch Out Columbus at Franklin Park Conservatory on Friday, spent three hours digging weeds... but Could not have asked for better weather to do it in!  Afterwards, we had free admission to the conservatory... which I could never ever pass up even if I was sooo hungry and dirty that I really should have gone home.  The tulips, the butterflies, and the palm house all to myself... I think I could live there.  ;)

The rest of the weekend we spent walking around taking pictures with the camera my husband rented for the weekend (testing out what camera to buy next).  So many cool spots in downtown to test different kinds of photo composition, so it worked out perfectly (although I think he decided this camera was not exactly what he wanted).

Well, the weekend is over, and that means meal planning for the week.  We actually have a short week this week since we'll be out-of-town for a couple days, but here is what I have planned...

panko crusted chicken and asparagus
mexican stuffed shells
chicken kabobs and spinach salad
pizza night
food on the road

8 Things to Do in Cbus This Weekend

It's Earth Week, so this week's things to do this weekend is a bit more green... but don't worry, there is still a bit of bacon thrown in!  ;)

What to do...
1. Go to the Bacon & Bourbon grand opening of the Steam Kitchen at Little Rock Bar.  Barbecue, bourbon, and cupcakes... oh my!
2. After dinner go for a walk under the light of the full moon at Blendon Woods metropark, meet at 8:30pm by the nature center
3. Clean up and head to Dublin for the Art's Council Garden Party!  Mingle with new friends and place a couple bids in the silent auction while enjoying local food and drink.
4. Start early on Saturday (9am) planting trees at Three Creeks Metropark.  Then stick around for a bike ride or a walk on the 25+ miles of trails.
5. After all of that work you will have earned some time at the Buckeye Bacon Bash inside the Scioto Downs starting at 4pm.  If you think bacon makes everything better... this event is for you!
6. Celebrate the Earth with some music, food trucks, and fun while creating zero waste (everything will be recyclable or compostable) at the Branch Out Columbus celebration Saturday 1-10pm.  While you're at it, donate a tree to their mission of planting 300,000 trees in Cbus by 2020.
7. Shop around at the Craftin' Outlaws Spring Fling inside the High Line Car House in the Brewery District.  Sweet Carrot's food truck will be there, Pattycakes baked goods (that's enough to get me there!), and CD102.5 will be handing out ice cream.
8. There are still tickets available for Book of Mormon at the Ohio Theater (love that place!).  Tickets are going fast and selection is limited, but there are several show times this weekend.

Where to eat...
On Saturday, Hoof Hearted is hosting a Swine and Dine event.  A four-course meal using the whole hog... $35 for two, but call ahead to reserve your spot!

Where to drink...
Check out the Walrus for their grunge night on Sunday and be transported back to the 90s.

What a beautiful weekend in Ohio!  It almost felt like summer with the sun and blue skies... hopefully this perfect weather will stick around and the winter coats can be stored away for good this time.  :)

We were actually in Canton this weekend for our niece and nephew's baptism.  It was just as beautiful up there!  We stopped by Hoppin' Frog on Saturday for a flight and tried a "beershake" for the first time.  I've added Bailey's to milkshakes before (which is a definite must try), and I have heard Guinness floats are good, but a milkshake?  It was really darn good!  They used their peanut butter porter... chocolate plus peanut butter... you don't have to ask me twice!

Because you never know how long nice weather will last in Ohio springs, we're front loading the week with some grill items to enjoy the ability to cook outside again.  What are you planning on making this week?

BBQ pulled chicken sandwiches
ribs and spinach salad
lamb burgers and brussel sprouts

8 Things to do in Cbus this weekend

I started this blog to record some recipes for myself and organize meal planning for the week.  It's evolved into a place where I share recipes and ideas, and sometimes things I'm passionate about (other than food) find their way into posts.  I posted 40 things to do in Columbus when it is cold or rainy over two years ago and it continues to be my most popular post.  While I was perusing through 614Magazine the other day, I thought it might be fun to start a new blog post series listing a small collection of fun things to do in my hometown every weekend.  So here is the first edition of 8 things to do in Columbus this weekend...

What to do...
1.  Start your weekend off with a girls night at the Columbus Zoo playing Bingo for Designer Purses
2.  Get a few friends to sign up for AIDS Walk Ohio to support a worthy cause, walk a few miles, then get some brunch at Double Comfort
3.  It's time for my favorite flower to bloom and Franklin Park Conservatory has a whole show for it!  The Daffodil Show is all weekend, plus you can check out the Blooms and Butterflies which opened last month.
4.  Want an excuse to dress up?  Head over to COSI for their annual Blast fundraiser and cocktail party with food, drinks, and live music (plus some of the exhibits are open)
5.  Enjoy the spring weather and support our Columbus Crew hosting NYC FC on Saturday at 7:30
6.  Grab your camera and checkout this stained glass church tour with Columbus Landmarks Foundation, Illuminated Spaces
7.  Studio 35 is showing one of my favorite movies, A League of Their Own, combined with a Great Lakes beer tasting... perfect combo for Sunday Funday
8.  Kick off Earth Week with The Crest Parsons by cleaning up the area and then kicking back for happy hour

Where to eat...
any of the 36 local, independent restaurants participating in Dine Originals Week

Where to drink...
Wolf's Ridge Brewery for Drafts and Crafts on Saturday

If you're from Columbus, you know the craft beer scene continues to grow.  This weekend, Platform Brew Co. sponsored a beer tasting brunch at Whole Foods Easton for a preview while they finish up work on their Cbus location coming this summer.  Kindred Ales opened in Gahanna having a very successful and packed first weekend.  And Lineage Brewing celebrated its first anniversary with a full beer list and a couple small batch taps.  Everyone is prepping for Columbus Beer Week which should prove to be a week full of collaborations, barrel aged brew, and lots of fun mid-May.

It's amazing how quickly you can turn to take out as an option when you don't have a meal plan.  So after the last couple week's adjusting coming back from our vacay in Mexico, trying to get back to meal planning so we can enjoy (fast) home cooked meals every night.  So here's the plan for this week...

sushi burritos
grilled caeser salad with chicken
double decker tacos and chili corn
crab cakes and green beans
shrimp po boys and crispy potatoes
